Digitized Microfiche

Digitized Microfiche, developed in the 1830's for many years microfiche has been used as one of the main processes for storing large volumes of data. Each 105mm x 148mm film holds 270 miniature frames, each the equivalent to one page of information. These can then be individually read through on a microfiche reader, by manipulating the microfiche slide you can search the files. It is also possible these days to produce digitized microfiche plates, which can be separately index and scanned through individually. Popularly used by libraries and newspapers to archive material for reuse at a later date without taking up excessive space within a building.

Digitized Microfilm, like microfiche, microfilm is used for the preservation and archiving of documents. Images are reduced and exposed onto 35mm film, which are then viewed through a microfilm viewer. These differ from microfiche in that they are stored on a reel spool and contain the images in a constant loop without the need to constantly change films for viewing. You simply have to scroll through the reel. These too can nowadays be digitized into an electronic format so that searching, storage and reading is far more simple and space saving.
